AUSTIN, Texas — The Nets blew a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter and another edge in overtime against the second-worst team in basketball. So what does that make the Nets? FORT MYERS, Fla. — In a perfect world, Will Warren would have shown the Yankees what he was made of without failing to make it out of the first inning Sunday. But that was the position in which Warren found himself, and the young right-hander still made a strong impression anyway as he continued to make his case to fill Gerrit Cole’s spot in the rotation to begin the season. In what was likely his penultimate start of the spring, Warren got knocked on his back in the first inning against the Red Sox at JetBlue Park. He faced seven…

TAMPA — The Yankees have one unfilled infield position, and a late-camp injury to DJ LeMahieu — whose X-rays were negative after fouling a ball off his foot Saturday — could open another, if LeMahieu doesn’t recover in time. Which means players such as Kevin Smith and Jahmai Jones could matter this season. Both are part of a backup competition that also includes 40-man roster member Jorbit Vivas and perhaps Jeter Downs, though Downs already has been reassigned to minor league camp. The front-runner for the backup infield spot had been Oswald Peraza before the prospect hurt his shoulder and…

They’re giving emojis a thumbs down. Gen Xers and baby boomers understand the meanings behind the digital icons, but they are not confident in their ability to use them, a new study from the University of Ottawa has found. “We found that older users are less likely to use emojis, use fewer emojis, and feel less comfortable in their ability to interpret emojis,” the study’s lead author, Isabelle Boutet, said in a statement. The research, which is being called the first “comprehensive investigation” into inter-generational emoji use including adults over 60, was published this month in the journal Computers in…

Diverging fortunes for the massive technology and growth names that have propelled the U.S. stock market higher are throwing a spotlight on their pricey valuations.
