Incendiary rhetoric about the war between Israel and Hamas is contributing to a stark rise in Islamophobia and antisemitism in the U.S. — and raising the risk that violent words could turn into actions. Three 20-year-old Palestinian men were shot and injured near the University of Vermont on Saturday after being confronted by a white man with a handgun while walking along a street — an incident federal authorities are investigating as a possible hate crime. Attorney General Merrick Garland said Monday a “sharp increase” in threats against Jewish, Muslim and Arab communities across the U.S. has been recorded since…
On November 9, the Office of Management and Budget issued a revised Circular A4 giving agencies guidance on the conduct of cost-benefit analysis. I know it is hard to write a more boring first sentence to an article, but bear with me — this is important. In 1981, President Ronald Reagan issued Executive Order 12291, which required federal agencies under the president’s control to conduct a “Regulatory Impact Analysis” (RIA) when issuing regulations with an economic impact of more than $100 million in any year. The order was modified by President Bill Clinton into Executive Order 12866, but the RIA…
Comedian Stephen Colbert, host of CBS’s “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” announced that his show is canceled this week as he recovers from surgery for a ruptured appendix. “Sorry to say that I have to cancel our shows this week. I’m sure you’re thinking, “Turkey overdose, Steve? Gravy boat capsize?” Actually, I’m recovering from surgery for a ruptured appendix,” Colbert said in a statement through the show’s various social media accounts. “I’m grateful to my doctors for their care and to Evie and the kids for putting up with me,” the late night host said, jokingly adding: “Going forward,…
A tribute service for former first lady Rosalynn Carter is set for Tuesday at Glenn Memorial Church at Emory University in Atlanta, Ga. Carter, wife of former President Carter, died last Sunday at 96 years old, just two days after she entered hospice care. She was diagnosed with dementia in March of this year. The high-profile event is an invitation-only service, but the public will have the chance to tune in to listen to the tributes and participate virtually in the service. Here’s what to know about it. When does it start? The service is set to begin at 1…
Sports Illustrated responded to a report alleging the magazine published AI-generated content, denying the claims but acknowledging that some articles were published under fabricated names. A spokesperson for The Arena Group, the magazine’s publisher, said the articles in question were licensed from a third-party company, AdVon Commerce, which “has assured us that all of the articles in question were written and edited by humans.” Some of the stories, however, were published by authors who used a “pen or pseudo name in certain articles to protect author privacy.” The spokesperson said “we strongly condemn” these actions and that the group has…
Rep. Kathy Manning (D-N.C.) said on Monday that Israel needs to make sure that militant group Hamas will never be able to conduct an attack on Israeli citizens again. During an appearance on NewsNation’s The Hill, Manning, who is Jewish, told host Blake Burman that Israeli forces have done an enormous amount of work to go after Hamas. She also noted that Israel still has another giant task ahead of them with securing the release of hostages still held captive by the militant group. “So we need to continue to push for the release of all the hostages, and we…
About 100 million Americans are expected to face freezing temperatures Tuesday evening into Wednesday, as a cold front settles in on the East Coast this week. The National Weather Service (NWS) is warning that high temperatures are expected to be 10 to 20 degrees below average Tuesday from the Midwest, Great Lakes and Ohio Valley regions into the East Coast and across southern Texas to Florida. AccuWeather is reporting that near New York City, temperatures are expected to dip into the 20s for the first time this season. Washington, D.C., and Atlanta will get their first below-freezing temperatures Wednesday morning…

The least popular American governor, Republican Tate Reeves of Mississippi, is more popular than President Biden, according to a recent Morning Consult poll. The latest Morning Consult poll, updated Monday, had Biden’s approval rating at 38 percent and his disapproval rating at 55 percent. According to the FiveThirtyEight’s average of all polls, Biden’s approval rating sat at 39.1 percent, with 54.7 percent disapproving. Reeves’s approval rating sat at 45 percent, according to the Morning Consult poll, with 46 percent disapproving.
