Amazon on Thursday predicted a rise in holiday revenue that could still miss Wall Street expectations, buoyed by a recent marketing blitz, faster delivery and stabilizing outlook for its cloud division. Amazon shares rose as much as 5% in after-hours trading before turning negative to slip 0.3%. Facing an array of challenges to its business, Amazon is trying to keep its mantle as the world’s biggest cloud provider and online retailer. The company has sought to bolster its cloud, answering rivals Google and Microsoft with a deal to invest up to $4 billion in chatbot-maker Anthropic and touting an AI service drawing thousands of users. “The retail giant’s slowdown…

Commercial Content 21+ Surely everyone has run into those “Why me?” scenarios, when the world, or the fantasy football gods, want you to wallow in misery — you seem constantly matched up against the highest scoring team in a given week, your team suffers an ill-timed injury, you drop a player right before they go off. Like any fantasy manager, we are not immune from nasty visits from the fantasy gods. And we made a move this week that we surmise set in motion a series of events that require an apology on our behalf to Kirk Cousins. Let us…

WINNIPEG, Manitoba — The hockey world continues to mourn the loss of Adam Johnson, a former NHL player who died after a freak accident in which his neck was cut by an opposing player’s skate blade during a game in England’s Elite Ice Hockey League on Saturday. He was 29. Since the tragic incident, discussions surrounding extra protective gear have naturally picked up. The Rangers have not had any official conversations about wearing neck guards, largely due to the fact that they are at the end of a road trip that concluded against the Jets on Monday, but it has…

Could Chandler Bing be any more important to “Friends”?  “Friends” was the biggest show in the world when it aired from 1994-2004 (and, to this day, it’s still a hit on streaming services).  It wouldn’t have been the same without Chandler Bing (Matthew Perry), who managed to be the heart, soul and sarcastic funny bone of the show.  On Saturday, Perry tragically died at age 54, reportedly by drowning in a hot tub at his California home.  Co-creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane and executive producer Kevin Bright have said, “We are shocked and deeply, deeply saddened by our beloved…

Want to feel old? Look no further. It’s 2023, and Urban Outfitters is selling iPods — and labeling them “vintage.” “First introduced in 2001, the iPod is the quintessential MP3 player, and this 5th generation device (2007) is the perfect blend of new millennium design with modern features,” the product description reads. “This is a genuine piece of vintage retro tech.” Though they’re not selling it just for the Y2K vibes — the music players have been refurbished and restored by Retrospekt, a workshop and product design studio dedicated to the restoration of “retro” technology. According to the product page, these…

ARLINGTON, Texas — Max Scherzer was acquired by the Rangers for today. Now. The present. He turned 39 three days before the Rangers acquired him. So this obviously was not about tomorrow even if as part of the July 27 trade Texas picked up his 2024 option. This franchise, which began in 1961 as the Washington Senators, has spent the past two years fully committed financially to winning its first-ever title. In dealing Luisangel Acuña, who instantly became the Mets’ top prospect, to obtain Scherzer, the Rangers were somehow even further intensifying these efforts. And the Rangers might indeed win…

Matthew Perry, who died Saturday at age 54, is beloved for playing Chandler Bing on the NBC sitcom “Friends.” But he nearly didn’t take the famously funny role. In 1994, Perry was virtually unknown and, as he said on a 2015 episode of “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” he had “no money.” He needed a gig.  “So I called my agent and said ‘You’ve got to get me any job, any job you can,’” Perry said.  The agent found him one — a bizarre ABC comedy pilot called “LAX 2194,” about, of all things, airport baggage handlers of the future. …

One year ago, billionaire and new owner Elon Musk walked into Twitter’s San Francisco headquarters with a white bathroom sink and a grin, fired its CEO and other top executives and began transforming the social media platform into what is now known as X. X looks and feels something like Twitter, but the more time you spend on it the clearer it becomes that it’s merely an approximation. Musk has dismantled core features of what made Twitter, Twitter — its name and blue bird logo, its verification system, its Trust and Safety advisory group. Not to mention content moderation and hate speech enforcement. He also fired, laid off or…
