Carmelo’s Knicks trade was ‘demise of the marriage’

The WAG life isn’t for the weak.

During an appearance on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast, titled “Life After Professional Athletes,” La La Anthony said her marriage started falling apart after Carmelo Anthony was traded from the Nuggets to the Knicks in 2011.

“When we lived here [in New York] under all of that [attention], that’s when things became complicated. I think that was kind of the start, now that I look back, that was kind of the start of the demise of the marriage,” La La said.

“It is the hardest with the scrutiny and the media and the press, just everything. It is really hard. That’s not the only reason things didn’t work out, but things got tough with New York… just constantly being under the spotlight and people watching every little thing.”

La La said she had many “sleepless nights” during her marriage with Carmelo Anthony, when the NBA star would travel to different cities.

“I never slept. It’s so funny, I used to think certain cities, like oh, ‘those are the problem cities.’ Miami, I’d be like, ‘Oh, I’m definitely not sleeping tonight or I’m going to figure out a way to get there,’” La La recalled to host Alex Cooper, who mentioned athletes having girlfriends in other cities.

“But here’s what I found out, dear. Be careful with these other cities that you think don’t have as much going on, because those are the ones guys where the s–t is going down.”

Anthony, who played with the Lakers last season, is a free agent.

“I’m just talking about what I went through… My best friend is married to an athlete, Ciara and Russell [Wilson] and they have an incredible bond, something I’ve never seen before,” La La said. “I’m so happy to even witness it because it makes me feel like, ‘Oh wow, that type of love really does exist,’ because I didn’t think it did for a long time. So it’s not across the board, so I can only speak to my experience.”

Earlier on in the episode, La La — who is not in a relationship right now — discussed how she is the go-to person in her friend group to lend relationship advice.

“My marriage didn’t even succeed. I don’t know how I’m the relationship expert… Maybe they’re like, ‘I don’ know, her s–t is f–ked up so bad, we want to make sure that doesn’t happen to us,’” she quipped.

As for what not to do in a relationship? La La joked, “Don’t be with an athlete,” adding “just kidding guys.”

La La filed for divorce from Carmelo last June, citing irreconcilable differences after being separated from Anthony for a several years. She underwent emergency heart surgery that same month.

The former couple, who met through a mutual friend when she was 22 and Anthony was 19, tied the knot in 2010. They share 15-year-old son Kiyan.

When Cooper referred to La La and Carmelo as the “original NBA couple,” the actress laughed.

“Well we see how that turned out guys. They probably won’t even let me in games anymore,” La La said.

La La and Anthony now have a mutual friendship and are focused on co-parenting their son.

“It wasn’t all bad. We had great, great times,” she said. “It ended bad but we’re still friends and we co-parent.”

Anthony is also believed to be single.
