Spurs star rookie Victor Wembanyama walked into Footprint Center on Tuesday night sporting a terrifying Slender Man costume and then, in the closing seconds of the second quarter, showed how terrifying he can be on the court — just like his basketball hero.
The first overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft posterized Suns forward Drew Eubanks with a left-handed slam that brought his teammates to their feet and shook the arena.
Wembanyama went right by NBA superstar Kevin Durant on his way to the basket and then went right over Eubanks for the highlight reel dunk.
The dunk was so powerful that it even knocked TNT broadcasters Reggie Miller and Brian Anderson out of their chairs.
Tuesday’s Halloween matchup between Phoenix and San Antonio pitted one of the league’s newest stars against one of its biggest stars, and Durant and Wembanyama had several highlight-worthy moments in the game’s first half.
Just moments before Wembanyama leaped over Eubanks, Durant had a monster slam past Wembanyama on an inbound pass.
That came after Durant knocked down a fadeaway jumper over Wembanyama in the closing seconds of the first quarter, which was impressive in its own right.
Durant also picked Wembanyama’s pocket in the first half.
But Wembanyama made a nice defensive play of his own in the first quarter when he blocked a 3-point attempt by Grayson Allen.
The French rookie has said in the past that Durant is his favorite player in the NBA, and he reiterated that Tuesday night.
“I like the fact that for years and years, nobody found a way to guard him, really, consistently,” Wembanyama told reporters previously about Durant, according to Suns reporter Duane Rankin. “This is probably the reason why he was one of my top favorite players ever. It is going to be special, of course, but every night it’s going to be special in the NBA.”
In a video posted by the league to X, Kevin Durant was asked what it meant to be Wmebanyama’s favorite player.
He had the perfect response to it: “It means I’m old.”
