On windy days, note that it’s best to have only experienced kayakers striking out on the water to Rattlesnake Island since the wind can create choppy waters. Nevertheless, even staying on the water around Rattlesnake Island is a great experience.
The trail has views of Mt. Knocti, wetlands viewing, and migratory movements of fowl birds. There are also ample picnic spots, canals, and islands near the Clearlake Keys. If you make it to the island, don’t worry so much about rattlesnakes.
Hogs were released years ago onto the island (so goes the legend), and the island is currently free of rattlesnakes or dangerous, venomous animals. Nevertheless, it’s best to always keep a look out and practice good safety while hiking on the island.
